Dirt x Digital: A Southern Survey in Clay
The application of digital tools and manufacturing technologies in ceramic art represents an exciting evolution of the field. An increasing array of digital practices such as CNC milling, laser cutting, 3D printing and scanning are invigorating both sculptural and functional artwork. Dirt x Digital showcases educators who integrate new technologies with traditional media in both their creative research and classrooms. The inclusive and engaged environment of Clemson’s research campus represents an important connection to expose more students, and by extension, a larger community, to how new technologies are being used for creative purposes within the context of ceramic art and education.
Curated by Valerie Zimany, this exhibition is supported in part by Clemson University’s CU SEED faculty research program of the Office of the Vice President of Research.

Kent State National Ceramics Invitational
The Kent State National Ceramics Invitational was curated by Assistant Professor in Ceramics at the School of Art, Peter Christian Johnson and includes artists Kyle Johns, Shalya Marsh and Sara Parent-Ramos. In a curator’s statement, Johnson stated, “In choosing the participants for this year's invitational, I looked for artists who were innovative in their practice, had a clear perspective, and whose use of ceramic material was thoughtfully linked to the content of their work. Shalya Marsh, Kyle Johns, and Sara Parent-Ramos all make exceptional work that is innovative and confident in its identity. Their artwork has separate conceptual concerns but share common threads in their examination of structure, their use of layering, and the vitality of the objects they make.”

Each artists relies on sculpture and mark-making to manipulate materials such as clay, paint, plastic sheeting, and foam to both stabilize the setting with realistic objects and to skew your perceptions of reality.

Presented at the Howard County Center for the Arts, Gallery II, this exhibition highlights two sculptors, Shalya Marsh and Lars Westby, both working in clay with distinct similarities and differences. The exhibit explores themes of coding and ciphers. Marsh's piece, Morse Plurality uses two types of encoding a straight substitution based on the textures applied to each form, and a Morse code created by the dots and dashes of the forms themselves. Cipher 037 represents the alphabet from A-Z plus the punctuation marks period and comma. Challenge yourself to decode Morse Plurality using the Cipher 037 and Morse code.
